Warriors Path State Park Site #A16 (on the hill) - Kingsport, TN |
DAY I - Wednesday, 5/26/04 This trip has not been titled. WOW! What a busy and eventful week it has been. I have been working the dayshift at my real job this week and T chose to pull the pop up to the campground on Wednesday to insure we had a site for the upcoming holiday weekend. I think everyone else had the same idea - the campground was full! T called me at work (while circling the campground) to inform me that plans were changing because there were no available sites. This is a state park and no reservations are accepted. At the exact time we were talking, a fifth wheel pulled out of a site in front of her. The Park Ranger, who had been following her, asked the folks if they were leaving and they said yes! The Park Ranger was nice enough to hold the spot while she circled the campground again... easier than backing up. She told me it was a good site and hung up the phone. While at work, i kept checking the weather. A bad storm was moving in but there was a small chance it would miss our area. Around 5:30 p.m. the storm hit! At 6:00 p.m., i called T on her cell phone and she was in the camper... getting ready to leave as the storm was worse than we had thought. She told me the Park Ranger was driving around telling everyone in tents to evacuate. I told T to meet me at WalMart so i could purchase those "pre-camping" supplies that always seem to come up. If i don't spend at least $50 before i get to the campground, i am not satisfied. :) At WalMart, i bought a new Rubbermaid 5-Day cooler. I had read a review on the Internet and these were supposed to be good coolers. In my opinion, you cannot beat the price ($23). The 5-Day cooler was for food (meat) only and it worked pretty good. Let's back up a bit. Around 3:00 p.m., T called me at work and asked me "Why aren't the overhead lights working?" My answer was "Uh, i don't know!" I told her how to check the fuses and all of them were good. A couple of years ago our converter went out in the middle of a camping trip and i just knew that was the problem. Things have a way of knowing when they are no longer under warranty! After checking the fuses, i had her lift the dinette seat to see if there was anything unusual. Sure enough, she found a green wire that wasn't connected to anything. I told her i would fix it (yeah right!). Ok, back to WalMart. While leaving WalMart, it was raining pretty good and we went to check on the camper one more time and then headed to Pizza Hut. When we arrived at Pizza Hut, it was standing room only. Within ten minutes we were seated and had placed our order. To make a long story short, we left an hour and ten minutes later with no food and a $30 credit. We were tired of waiting. Just a few minutes later, we found out why the Pizza Hut was crowded. The storm that passed through had knocked out all the power. Around 8:30 p.m. we arrived home. On the way, we saw several downed trees (big uprooted trees) and the roads were a mess. We drove around our neighborhood and several trees were broken off near the ground. At home, i surveyed the damage around our house and we only had two good sized limbs down - one of them was hanging across our yard barn. I went out out and pushed it off into the yard and when i came inside i was told "We have no power!" I put some batteries in the XM radio and listened to the NBA ball game frustrated because i could not watch it on TV. With no backup alarm clock, i depended on my cell phone clock to wake me up for work on Thursday. What a day... and this was only part of it! Day 2 - Photos - Trip Index |
